TOTO rose from humble beginnings as a ceramic sanitary ware laboratory in Japan to becoming a global leader and a household name developing some of the most innovative technology in sanitary ware – with prominent presence in multiple regions, including America, Europe and Asia.

From a ceramic sanitary ware laboratory, Kazuchika Okura established the company TOYO TOKI CO., Ltd., which will later be renamed to TOTO. R&D efforts led to the production of Japan’s first ceramic-seated flush toilet in 1914. The demand for sanitary ware rapidly grew following an earthquake that struck Tokyo in 1923 and the subsequent reconstruction of the city, including its sewage system. In addition to ceramic sanitary ware, production of metal fittings and faucets also commenced during this period.

Since its first sale, the company has continuously challenged accepted notions of cleanliness. TOTO’s leadership position in bathroom technology and design was most evident when the company developed the construction method for the world’s first prefabricated bathroom module in 1963. With this, TOTO was able to meet the needs for the mass production of bathrooms during the construction boom that occurred when Japan hosted the Olympics in 1964. TOTO proceeded to venture into Indonesia in 1977 and, thereafter, continued to expand and can now be found all over the world.

In 1980, TOTO revolutionised the industry with the introduction of the Washlet, an electronic toilet seat using a water-cleansing system. The Washlet provided a whole new level of cleanliness and comfort, becoming TOTO’s signature product. This signature product quickly became a Japanese cultural and commercial sensation. Following the Washlet, TOTO translated its advanced technology into other products including high-end modular kitchens and wardrobe systems.

TOTO’s commitment to innovation stands firm with the opening of the TOTO Universal Research Centre in 2006, which aims to create new products through an extensive process of customer dialogues and feedback. Since the launch of the first model of the TOTO Washlet, more than 35 years have gone into adding new innovations and features in the never-ending pursuit of the ultimate comfort and hygiene in the bathroom. Washlet shipments currently number in the tens of millions.

TOTO has successfully established international presence in multiple countries including Singapore, China, India, Brazil and Germany among others. TOTO products have also accumulated an impressive track record of awards and certifications – a true testament to the quality and innovation of TOTO, which attracts customers to the brand time and again. Today, TOTO continues to grow from strength to strength, bringing customers the most thoughtful products to create Cleaner, Smarter Living.
